Build the room before the work enters it.

The Royal Underground Theatre Company is developing a workshop program for Bay Area artists who want more than a class and less than an ivory tower. We’re building a practical, artist-centered space for playwriting, directing, audition preparation, dramaturgical conversation, and the messy, necessary work of getting better in public.

Our goal is simple: create a room where artists can experiment, receive useful feedback, and develop the skills that make theatre sharper, braver, and more alive.

WHAT WE’RE BUILDING

Writing

Playwriting Lab

A workshop stream for writers developing new plays, scenes, monologues, or theatrical ideas that need a room, a deadline, and smart feedback. This will focus on dramatic structure, character, dialogue, stakes, revision, and hearing the work out loud.

Direction

Directing Studio

A practical space for directors to strengthen their process: text analysis, visual storytelling, rehearsal strategy, actor communication, staging, pacing, and how to turn an idea into something playable in the room.

Performance

Audition Workshop

A focused workshop for actors who want sharper audition materials, stronger room presence, and cleaner storytelling. We’ll look at monologues, cold reads, sides, self-tapes, callbacks, and the practical realities of being castable without sanding off your individuality.

Who This Is For

These workshops are being designed for Bay Area artists at different stages of their practice: emerging writers with a first scene, actors rebuilding their audition muscles, directors looking for a sharper room vocabulary, and experienced artists who want a serious but generous place to keep growing.

We’re especially interested in artists who care about collaboration, clarity, risk, discipline, and theatre that feels immediate. You do not need to arrive polished. You do need to arrive curious and ready to work.
